Sean Merrell

Style: Dirty, Techy, Progressive House

Sean started his musical career like most kids start any musical career, forced by his parents to play an instrument. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. At the age of 8, Sean started classical training on the violin, and the age his passion for music blossomed. Music seemed to be second nature to Sean, something that had been flowing in his blood since the day he was born. His love for the violin grew over his 6 years of training, fueling his desire to seek alternative forms of music and not just classical.

The rhythm and harmony instilled in all classical music stemed his love for electronic music. Built upon strict standards of time and key, electronic music seemed to go beyond the boundaries of what sean had been taught his whole life. As time passed, he developed a passion for electronic music, developing the need to play music in this form on his own. At the age of 20, Sean, siezed an opportunity to fulfill his desires: spin vinyl. He picked up a pair of Technic 1200's and started to teach himself how to mix. It didn't take long before he was addicted and would spend every free second behind the decks.

At the same time, Van was hosting a college radio show at KUWS called the Dean's List, on which he played the latest in electronic music. Sean would go down every Tuesday night and bring his turntables and throw down live with Van for 2 hours. A couple years passed, all the while continuing to play at the station and various house parties, at which point he decided it was time to move down to Minneapolis and begin a new career, both in life and in music.

Sean moved in with Justin, whom he met working at KUWS, and the two of them started to make things happen. Labeling themselves as Nascent Numen, they made a name for themselves with a regular gig called Stigma at a small bar off the beaten path in the warehouse district of Minneapolis called Mell's Beauty Bar. Justin's funky house vibe and Sean's progressive house/trance groove complimented one another. Sean's style grew with his interactions with Justin, from a strictly progressive house/trance vibe into a dirty, techy progressive house.

With events like the Hawiian Tropics Bikini Contest and Spectrum on Saturday nights at Eurphoria, the Nascent Numen crew had begun a journey. Now, with a weekly show called Axis every Thursday night at the Twin Cities biggest record shop, things are certain starting to revolve around an axis: music.
